Cathedral Floor Mosaic

An exciting project is taking place in co-operation with St Christopher’s Senior School. For some time now concern has been expressed about the blue sanctuary carpet in the cathedral. With the huge amount of wear and tear from continuous use, it is having trouble keeping to its shape and keeping it clean is a struggle. There is also ample evidence of burn marks and scorch holes from the copious amounts of incense used by one or two of our host congregations.

Replacing the carpet was considered but this would only invite more of the same necessary abuse. As an alternative tiles were suggested to match the rest of the cathedral floor. This idea then developed into the possibility of having a mosaic designed to cover the whole of the sanctuary floor which would bring more colour into the building, enhance the acoustics and be much easier to keep clean. St Christopher’s Senior School were approached with a view to the students in the Art and Design Technology Departments initiating a competition. This now well under way and we look forward to the results. A prize will be awarded to the winning designer. Watch this space.
