Kath Lethem
1922 to 2006

‘May Kath rest in peace
And may perpetual light shine upon her’

It is with sadness that we record the recent passing away of Janet Talbot’s mother Kath Lethem. Kath was for a number of years a regular winter visitor and communicant at the Cathedral and will be particularly remembered for her gift of poetry. Below is a poem written by Kath and read at her funeral service by her grandson James.

What are Denominations?

One night I had a dream
And with St. Peter I did speak,
I had some questions that puzzled me
And the answers I did seek.

St. Peter gazed with pitying eyes
My ignorance he did not disdain
He said my child you’ve got it wrong
In Heaven there is no such name.

I asked, when Jesus calls for me
Will He want to know
That as a Baptist I started out
Now to the Methodist Church I go.

A Baptist, a Methodist, or C of E
Are names unknown in Heaven
A Catholic, Brethren, or URC
Are tags you yourselves have given.

And what about my other friends
Who go to the C of E,
Will He know where they belong,
Will they find eternity?

To enter into my Father’s house
You need only one qualification,
If you can say I love my Lord
You have eternal salvation

I know people who go to Elim Church
And I’ve many a Catholic friend,
Pentecostal, Assemblies of God,
URC, and of course Brethren.

Now place a label on your heart
Which everyone can read
Write on this label CHRISTIAN
It’s all you’ll ever need.
