What is the “Alpha”
course?
The Alpha course is a safe place to explore the meaning of life; to
discuss what Christianity really is all about. It consists of a
series of talks addressing key issues relating to the Christian
faith. Topic titles range from ‘Why Did Jesus Die?‘ to ‘Does God
Heal Today?’
How does it work?
There is a light meal together at the beginning of each session
which gives people a chance to get to know each other. After this,
there is a talk lasting about 45 minutes, either presented live or
watched from a video. People then divide into small groups (of about
8 people) to discuss the topic of the evening, ask questions and
express opinions. Here people listen, learn, discuss and discover.
And ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is too simple
or too hostile.
Each small group would have one or two Christians who facilitate the
discussion ensuring that all are given an opportunity to freely
talk. These facilitators don’t need to have all the answers and
indeed are initially encouraged not to give their opinion so that
the discussion doesn’t become a sermon! It has been shown that
people are more willing to accept an answer if they have discovered
it for themselves.
While the course is an excellent way to share the faith with
non-Christians, it is also a great way for all Christians to learn
and grow. Perhaps it will challenge some of their ideas as unusual
questions are asked.
Currently there are over 28,700 courses running in 152 countries
worldwide. Thousands of people have become Christians, churches have
grown and believers have deepened their faith through this course so
don’t miss out!

‘Alpha’ at St.
Christopher’s Cathedral.
It is proposed to start the first Alpha course on Monday 19
September. This will be held in the home of Rod and Avril
Taylor. Depending on the number of people interested in joining the
ten-week course there may be more than one course running at the
same time and thus there may be earlier or later starting dates and
more than one venue.
Rod and Avril are acting as coordinators for Alpha and all
enquiries should be made through them.
