The determined and passionate efforts of a young girl named Mary
Jones to obtain a copy of the Bible 200 years ago inspired a group
of men in London England to start what became the first Bible
Society in the World.
In the last 200 years Bible Societies have grown from this small
beginning until in 2004 the movement translated printed and
distributed scripture in more than 2,600 languages. The Bible
Society is committed to the task of making God’s Word available to
people everywhere and in the language they understand.
Last year a new project involving the production of audio tapes for
the less literate in the Gulf region was started. The tapes are
integral in a cheap sealed solar powered cassette player thus
enabling the very poor to hear scripture in their own language.
To make the scriptures available to the less fortunate the Bible
Societies rely on donations from both individuals and churches, and
in Bahrain the many congregations are very supportive.
The main Bible Society facility in Bahrain is the extremely well
stocked Resource Centre at the National Evangelical Church. It is
there that Mr. Anup Patro, the local Bible Society representative
has his office (see below contact details). At the Cathedral the
smaller subsidiary centre is well worth a visit. It is open every
evening except Monday, and also on Friday mornings.
