Harvest News

For most of us in Bahrain the fruits of the harvest are not gained through picking the fruit or harvesting the wheat, though some of us may plant a few seeds for pleasure. No, for most of us, the fruits of the harvest are found in Al Jazira, Al Osra, Carrefour or Lulu. But the wonderful reality of daily provision of food whether picked directly or packaged, preserved, tinned , shipped, distributed and sold in our shops is surely something to celebrate.

Our Harvest Festival weekend will over the first weekend in October (1st-3rd). On Friday 1st October at 9.30am there will be a Harvest Festival Family Service. On the Friday evening at 5.00pm there will be a World Family Harvest Supper and Barn Dance, to which you are invited to bring a dish of food from your country of the world to share and, if you have one, your country’s flag. On Saturday 2nd October at 10.00am the Awali Church will have a Harvest Festival Family Service and Holy Communion services at the Cathedral on Sunday 3rd October at 10.30am and 6.30pm will both have a Harvest theme.

Our Harvest giving will have two elements: please bring non-perishable foods to services over the weekend, which will be directed to the Ecumenical Conference of Charity’s work with the poor in Bahrain. Our giving of money will be directed to Christ Church Aden. Yemen is the poorest country in the Middle East and Christ Church is at the forefront of providing healthcare through its medical clinics, which employ 25 staff. The General Department provides basic healthcare to the poorest members of the local community: patients have access to doctors for a nominal fee but also are provided with basic drugs free of charge. The Eye Department has a growing reputation, recognized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for its work with Somali refugees, but also drawing patients from all over Yemen. In addition in 2009 the Ras Morbat Institute was completed which will be a vocational training centre where Yemenis and Somalis will be taught advanced carpentry skills giving them the opportunity to become self-sufficient and provide for their families. You have the opportunity to share in this ministry by your giving over the Harvest Festival Weekend. Please give generously: envelopes dedicated for Christ Church Aden will be available in September
